About
Natural Ear Music was established in 1991 in Austin, Texas to teach kids how to play rock ‘n’ roll by ear. We group kids who are close enough in age and experience to form a functional band unit. We teach them what we know best: guitar-driven rock in a live music format.
Our bands perform at student festivals, concerts and local music venues. We are always in demand for parties and school functions, as well as hosting our own all-school shows.
We don’t use sheet music or tab, music is played naturally and easily. With over twenty years in Austin, as far as we know, we were the first “school of rock” anywhere.
First time visitors to Natural Ear Music School are always amazed by the electric performances of the young bands in the soundproofed rooms – kids as young as 7 years old playing rock ‘n’ roll with their friends in a band. We are a school that teaches advanced music and performance skills as integral parts of our program.
Natural Ear Music School was established in 1991. It was the first school of it’s kind, teaching music by ear instead of using sheet music. All of our teachers are working members of the Austin music community.
What’s a Natural Ear?
All of us have a native facility for music and all language is based on rhythm, tone and pitch change. Humanity creates sounds for its amusement and to communicate ideas. Music stretches out the sounds we produce, either through our voices or instruments that we have made.
A natural ear for music means that you are ‘tuned in’ to it’s language, and have a desire to express yourself through music. Repeated experience and experimentation create skills that elevate an individual’s ability to communicate in this way.

John Moyer
Owner/Director
John is the bassist and back-up vocalist for the alternative metal band, Disturbed. Disturbed has sold over 11 million albums worldwide and has released four consecutive studio albums that have debuted at number-one on the Billboard 200. The band received a Grammy Award nomination in 2008.
