Our Instructors
The instructors at Natural Ear are highly trained and gifted instructors with one goal in mind… educating their students.
John Moyer, Owner/Director
John is the bassist and back-up vocalist for the alternative metal band, Disturbed. Disturbed has sold over 11 million albums worldwide and has released four consecutive studio albums that have debuted at number-one on the Billboard 200. The band received a Grammy Award nomination in 2008.
Before joining Disturbed in 2004, John was part of the Texas hard-rock act, The Union Underground on Columbia Records. Prior to that, he was in the Austin band, Soak, signed to Interscope Records. John has a signature line of basses with BC Rich guitars. He also has a signature line of speaker cabs and practice amps with Kustom Amplification. John also works in partnership with Silver Tongue Management where he helps discover and develop upcoming artists/bands. Recently, John put out an instructional bass guitar video for modern metal bass with Rockhouse Publishing and produced and composed four songs for the upcoming Topware video game, Scivelation.
John started teaching at Natural Ear Music in 1999 when his first band was just getting signed. Over the past twelve years John has played on eight major label releases and has toured the nation and the world countless times over but he has always made time in his schedule to teach at Natural Ear Music.
With Disturbed taking an extended break and the former owner (founder Michele “Mike” Murphy) busy being mayor of Liberty Hill, Texas, it is a perfect time for John to take over the school. “I have always loved teaching and I am amazed by the talent of today’s youth…especially in Austin.”
John lives in South Austin with his wife, Kristen and his two children, Kiley and Logan.
Rachel Bullion, Instructor-specializing in our younger students
Born and raised in Austin, Rachel started taking piano lessons when she was five, but her true musical upbringing began here at Natural Ear Music when she was eight years old. Discovering a passion for music, she became versed in multiple instruments including guitar, bass guitar, keyboard and drums. As bass player and one of the vocalists for the band Red Headed Stepchild, one of the original Natural Ear Music formed bands, Rachel enjoyed an enriched childhood performing at multiple established local venues such as Antones, Scholz, and the Continental Club as well as many others. By the age of fifteen, she continued her involvement with Natural Ear by becoming a student teacher. Working closely for many years with founder Mike Murphy, Rachel has become a master of teaching the Natural Ear Music way. Her extensive repertoire of kid-friendly songs is always well recieved by the beginners and young prodigies that she loves working with.
Past Natural Ear Music coaches have included Will Sexton, Alvin and Jason Crow, Speedy Sparks, Charlie Prichard, Thierry LeCoz, Mike and Corey Keller, Eric Hokkanen, Paul Pearcy, Leeann Atherton, Ted Roddy, Brent Wilson, De Lewellen, Tracey Crossett, Will Knaak, John X Reed, Jimmie Pettit, Jake Andrews, Micah Ater, and many others.
